성모 승천 대성당
Assumption Cathedral
Assumption Cathedral
Assumption Cathedral is the principal Roman Catholic church in Thailand and the seat of the Archdiocese of Bangkok, standing on Oriental Avenue near the Chao Phraya River in Bang Rak district. Its historical weight comes less from ornate decoration than from status: it hosted the papal visits of John Paul II in 1984 and Francis in 2019. For visitors, the appeal is a quiet, European-style church interior that contrasts with Bangkok's temple architecture, plus a look at the small colonial-era Catholic community that grew up around this stretch of the riverfront.
Getting there
From central Bangkok, the easiest route is BTS to Saphan Taksin station, then a short walk or taxi through the sois toward Oriental Avenue, roughly 10-15 minutes total. A taxi from Sukhumvit or Silom takes about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, which can be heavy near the river in late afternoon.
How much time to allow
Most visitors spend 20-30 minutes here, enough to walk the grounds and step inside the nave. It's a stop to fold into a longer riverside walk rather than a destination for a full outing.
When to go
Mornings are quieter and cooler for walking the surrounding streets. The area is not typically crowded with tourists, though it can get busy during Sunday services and Catholic holidays such as Christmas and Easter, when Mass draws large local congregations. Outside those times, expect a calm, low-key visit.
Combine it with
Holy Rosary Church, another historic Catholic church, is about 0.9km away and pairs naturally with a religious-architecture walk along the river. Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, a Hindu temple, is 0.8km off and offers a contrast in style and worship. The Sathorn Unique Tower, an abandoned high-rise known among urban explorers, sits just 0.7km away for those interested in Bangkok's unfinished skyline.
