Museo Sugbo

Museo Sugbo

Museo Sugbo is a museum in Cebu City, Philippines. The museum is located in the former Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) jail, and is located four blocks away from Plaza Independencia. The museum is owned by the Cebu provincial government.

What it is

Museo Sugbo occupies the former Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, a jail building that the provincial government converted into a museum. The unusual setting is a big part of the draw: exhibits on Cebu's history, from Spanish colonial rule through the wartime and postwar periods, are laid out inside old cell blocks and prison structures rather than a purpose-built museum space. It suits travelers interested in local history and in seeing a repurposed institutional building rather than a conventional gallery.

Getting there

Museo Sugbo sits near Cebu City's old town core, about four blocks from Plaza Independencia. From central Cebu City it's a short taxi or Grab ride, typically well under 15 minutes depending on traffic, or a walkable route if you're already exploring the downtown heritage area. Coming from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), plan on a longer transfer into the city center before making your way here.

Time to allow

Most visitors spend one to two hours inside, depending on how many of the former cell-block galleries they work through.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking between downtown sites. The museum is indoors, so it's a reasonable option to slot in during the hottest part of the day or if it's raining.

Combine it with

  • Cathedral Museum of Cebu (0.9km) and Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral (0.9km) — both an easy walk away
  • Minor Basilica of the Holy Child (1.2km) and Magellan's Cross (1.2km) — grouped together, making a natural downtown heritage circuit
