Plaza Sugbu

Plaza Sugbu

Plaza Sugbu, formerly known as Plaza Rizal, is a public square in Cebu City, Philippines. The square connects the Magellan's Cross kiosk and the Cebu City Hall. The square was inaugurated in 2008 by Philippine president Gloria Arroyo.

Overview

Plaza Sugbu is an open public square in downtown Cebu City, laid out to connect the Magellan's Cross kiosk with Cebu City Hall. It was inaugurated in 2008, replacing the older Plaza Rizal on the same ground. There's no single monument to see here — the value is in the square itself as a place to pause, walk between the surrounding historic sites, and watch daily city life around the government and church district.

Getting there

The plaza sits in the old downtown core, a short taxi or tricycle ride from most Cebu City hotels — usually 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. If you're coming from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car, more during peak hours. Since it borders Magellan's Cross and City Hall, it's easiest to treat it as a walking stop rather than a separate destination.

How much time to allow

15 to 30 minutes is enough to cross the square and take in its surroundings, since it's a connecting space rather than a sight with exhibits or displays.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable, as the open square offers little shade and midday heat can be intense. The area sees heavy foot and vehicle traffic during weekday business hours because of its proximity to City Hall.

What to combine it with

  • Magellan's Cross (0 km) — directly adjacent, easily combined in the same stop.
  • Minor Basilica of the Holy Child (0.1 km) — a short walk away.
  • Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral and Plaza Independencia (both around 0.3 km) — both within easy walking distance, making this cluster of sites a natural single outing through Cebu's historic downtown.
