Jahrhundert errichtet und wird der Florentiner Protorenaissance zugerechnet. Die Fassade ist mit Marmor inkrustiert. Overview
San Miniato al Monte is a Romanesque basilica set on a hill above Florence, with a distinctive marble-patterned façade and an interior that includes mosaics, an inlaid marble floor, and a raised choir over a crypt. Visitors come for the architecture and decoration itself, and for the setting: it sits above the city, so the approach and the views along the way are part of the appeal, not just the church.
Getting there
From the historic centre, it's roughly a 20-25 minute walk uphill, much of it via the stepped path from Piazzale Michelangelo. Alternatively, a bus runs from the centre partway up, cutting down the climbing. Either way, expect a steady uphill stretch on foot for the final approach, as the basilica sits above the piazzale.
Time to allow
Allow around 30-45 minutes to look through the interior and cloister area, plus extra time for the walk up and the views from the terrace outside. If you're combining it with the walk from Piazzale Michelangelo, budget closer to 1.5-2 hours in total.
Best time to visit
Late afternoon toward early evening tends to be quieter and gives good light on the façade and views over the city. Piazzale Michelangelo just below draws heavy crowds around sunset, and some of that traffic continues up to the basilica, so if you want a calmer visit, come earlier in the day.
Combine with
- Piazzale Michelangelo (0.4km) - the natural stop just before or after, with the main panoramic viewpoint over Florence.
- Basilica of Santa Croce (1km) - a walkable next stop back down toward the centre.
- Casa Buonarroti and Museo Galileo (1.2km each) - both reasonable additions if you're spending a fuller day moving between the hillside and the centre.
