Ireibaru Site
Ireibaru is a major archaeological site of Okinawa Island, located in town of Chatan on the western coast. It includes occupations for the whole duration of the Kaizuka period, for the Gusuku and Early Kingdom periods, the early modern period and the modern period. It is the only site in Okinawa Prefecture to show occupations for each of the phases of the Kaizuka period. It yielded large quantities of artefacts in perishable materials conserved in wet context. It has been designated as a National Historic Site in 2010. Chatan Museum opened on 20 November 2024 at the location of the site.
Ireibaru Site
Ireibaru is an archaeological site on the western coast of Chatan, on Okinawa Island. What makes it notable is the continuity of the record: excavations here have turned up evidence of occupation spanning the entire Kaizuka period, plus later Gusuku and Early Kingdom layers, through to the early modern and modern eras — the only site in Okinawa Prefecture with a complete sequence of Kaizuka-period phases in one place. Wet, waterlogged soil conditions also preserved organic artefacts that normally rot away, which is part of why the site was designated a National Historic Site in 2010. In November 2024 the Chatan Museum opened directly on the site, giving visitors somewhere to see finds and get context rather than just looking at an open field.
Getting there
Chatan is on Okinawa's west coast; the site sits within the town near the coastline. There's no train service in this part of Okinawa, so a rental car or taxi from central Naha is the practical option, with the drive typically taking around 30–40 minutes depending on traffic.
How long to spend
Budget an hour or so to see the museum exhibits and walk the site itself; longer if you want to read through the displays in detail.
When to go
This is a low-key, non-touristy stop, so crowding isn't a real concern. As with most outdoor sites in Okinawa, midday in summer is hot and humid, so a morning or late-afternoon visit is more comfortable.
Combine it with
- General sightseeing along the Ryukyu Islands and Okinawa Islands coastal areas nearby (about 1.4km away)
- Hagushi, roughly 4.7km away
- Sakima Art Museum, about 5.4km away, for an art stop on the same trip
