Roman Forum
Das Forum Romanum in Rom ist das älteste römische Forum und war Mittelpunkt des politischen, wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen und religiösen Lebens. Es liegt in einer Senke zwischen den drei Stadthügeln Kapitol, Palatin und Esquilin und war der Ort vieler öffentlicher Gebäude und Denkmäler.
What it is
The Roman Forum was the civic and commercial core of ancient Rome, a long plaza lined with the remains of temples, basilicas, and government buildings. Walking through it, you pass column fragments, triumphal arches, and platforms where the Senate met and public life played out. It rewards travellers interested in ancient history and ruins rather than manicured gardens, despite how it's sometimes categorized.
Getting there
From central Rome it's an easy walk or short metro ride: the Colosseo stop on Metro Line B sits right next to the entrance, and most central hotels are within 20-30 minutes on foot.
Time to allow
Plan for at least 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the main paths and read the site markers. History-minded visitors often spend closer to 3 hours, especially if continuing up to the Palatine Hill, which is usually included on the same route.
When to go
Go early in the morning to avoid both the heat and the crowds, which build steadily through midday, particularly in spring and summer. There is little shade across the site, so a cooler, overcast day or the last hours before closing tend to be more comfortable.
What to combine it with
The Forum connects directly to several sites within its grounds, including the Arch of Septimius Severus, Temple of Saturn, and Temple of Vesta, all about 0.1km away. The Capitoline Museums are just 0.2km off, making them a natural next stop after exploring the ruins.
