Asian Civilisations Museum
What it is
The Asian Civilisations Museum focuses on the cultures and trade networks that shaped Singapore and the wider region, with collections spanning Southeast Asia, China, South Asia and West Asia. It's one of four sibling museums in Singapore, alongside the Peranakan Museum, National Museum of Singapore and Singapore Art Museum. The building itself sits directly on the Singapore River, in a colonial-era structure that's worth a look from outside as well as in. Travellers interested in maritime trade history, ceramics, textiles or regional religious art tend to get the most out of a visit.
Getting there
It sits in the civic district, an easy walk from Raffles Place and City Hall MRT stations — figure 10-15 minutes on foot from either. Taxis and ride-hail drop-offs are straightforward given the riverside location.
Time to allow
Plan for roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to move through the main galleries without rushing. Add extra time if there's a temporary exhibition on.
When to go
Mornings and weekday visits are generally calmer than weekend afternoons. Because most galleries are indoors and air-conditioned, it's a reasonable option to build into an itinerary on a hot or rainy day.
Combine with
- Singapore River (0.3km) — riverside walkways right outside the museum, good for a stroll before or after.
- National Gallery Singapore (0.3km) — pairs naturally for a museum-focused day in the civic district.
- Merlion Park (0.4km) — a short walk along the river for the classic skyline view.
- One Raffles Place (0.4km) — nearby if you want shopping or dining afterward.
