Sant'Erasmo
Die Insel Sant’Erasmo ist die größte Insel in der Lagune von Venedig und zählt knapp 600 Einwohner. Sie dient vor allem der Versorgung der Stadt Venedig mit Gemüse. Der Hauptort San Erasmo Chiesa befindet sich ziemlich genau in der Mitte der Insel, auf der der Lagune zugewandten Seite. Die Insel ist von Venedig aus mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln erreichbar.
Sant'Erasmo
Sant'Erasmo is the largest island in the Venetian Lagoon, but it feels nothing like Venice itself. There are no canals lined with palazzi here — instead, flat fields, market gardens, and a handful of farmhouses. The island is known for its produce, particularly artichokes, and much of the land is still cultivated. Travellers come here for a quiet, rural counterpoint to the crowds of central Venice: open horizons, lagoon views, and a slower pace.
Getting there
Vaporetto line 13 runs from Fondamente Nove, on the northern edge of Venice, to Sant'Erasmo. The crossing takes around 35–40 minutes, passing Murano on the way.
How much time to allow
A half day is enough to get a feel for the island, especially if you walk or cycle along its main road. A full day allows for a more relaxed pace, with time to stop along the shoreline or explore further into the fields.
When to go
The island stays uncrowded even in peak season, since most visitors to the lagoon head to Burano or Murano instead. Spring and early summer are pleasant for walking or cycling, when the fields are green and the weather is mild. Bring sun protection, as there's little shade.
