What it is
Ubud Palace, formally Puri Saren Agung, is the former residence of the Ubud royal family and remains an active royal compound rather than a museum piece. Visitors come to walk through its courtyards and pavilions, which show off Balinese stone carving and the elaborately carved gateways typical of the region's palace architecture. Traditional Balinese dance performances are staged in the outer courtyard some evenings, which is a common reason people time a visit here.
Getting there
The palace sits right on Jalan Raya Ubud, the main street through central Ubud, so if you're staying anywhere in town it's usually a short walk. From the edge of central Ubud, expect no more than 10-15 minutes on foot; from further out, a short taxi or scooter ride will do it. Coming from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), plan for roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car depending on traffic, as Ubud is inland from the airport.
How long to stay
The complex itself is compact, so 30 to 45 minutes is enough to walk through the courtyards and take in the architecture. If you're attending an evening dance performance, budget an additional hour or so for that.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter, before tour groups and day-trippers arrive from other parts of Bali. The area right around the palace, along Jalan Raya Ubud, gets busy with foot and vehicle traffic through the day, so an early visit makes for easier photos and a calmer walk through the grounds.
