マゼラン・クロス
Magellan’s Cross
'マゼランの十字架 は、ポルトガル・スペインの探検家であるマゼランが1521年3月15日にフィリピンのセブ島に到着した時に建てた十字架である。
What it is
Magellan's Cross is a wooden cross housed in an octagonal stone pavilion on Plaza Sugbo, next to the Basilica del Santo Niño. It marks the spot where a cross was planted by members of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition on April 21, 1521, when they landed in Cebu. The current cross is generally understood to encase the original in tindalo wood, kept there for protection. Inside the pavilion, a painted ceiling mural depicts the planting of the cross and the baptism of Cebu's early inhabitants. It's a quick stop, but a significant one for anyone tracing the history of Christianity's arrival in the Philippines.
Getting there
The pavilion sits in the heart of downtown Cebu City, so most visitors reach it by taxi, ride-hailing app, or jeepney from wherever they're staying. From the main hotel districts (Cebu Business Park or Cebu IT Park), expect a ride of around 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. If arriving from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), it's roughly a 30-45 minute drive across the bridge into the city, again traffic-dependent. The area is walkable once you're downtown, and it sits within the same block as the Basilica.
How long to stay
Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough to see the cross, read the informational plaques, and take photos. Most people combine it with the Basilica visit next door, which extends the stop naturally.
When to go
The pavilion is small and gets crowded quickly, especially with tour groups and vendors selling candles nearby. Mornings tend to be calmer than midday. It can feel especially packed during religious holidays and around the Sinulog festival period in January, when Cebu draws large crowds for Santo Niño-related celebrations.
What to combine it with
- Minor Basilica of the Holy Child (0.1km) — immediately next door, the natural pairing for this stop.
- Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral (0.3km) — a short walk away.
- Cathedral Museum of Cebu (0.3km) — near the cathedral, worth a look if you're interested in church history.
- Carbon Market (0.4km) — for a change of pace, Cebu's old public market is close enough to add on.
