シンガポール植物園
Singapore Botanic Gardens
What it is
Singapore Botanic Gardens is a tropical garden on the edge of the Orchard Road shopping district, and the only tropical garden on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It's a place to walk among mature rainforest trees, themed planting areas, lakes, and the National Orchid Garden, which holds a large collection of orchid species and hybrids. It works as a break from the city's shopping streets and traffic, or as a morning walk or jog if you're staying nearby.
Getting there
From central Orchard Road, it's a walk of roughly 15-20 minutes, or a short taxi/rideshare ride of about 10 minutes depending on traffic. The Botanic Gardens MRT station (Circle and Downtown lines) sits right at one of the entrances, making it an easy stop if you're coming from further out, including from Changi Airport (SIN) via the MRT with a transfer.
How much time to allow
A walk through the main gardens and Swan Lake takes about 1-1.5 hours. If you want to visit the National Orchid Garden as well, budget an extra hour. Those wanting to see most of the grounds, including the rainforest patch and Ginger Garden, should allow half a day.
When to go
Go in the early morning to avoid the midday heat and humidity, which can make longer walks uncomfortable. Weekends draw more local visitors, including families and joggers, so weekday mornings tend to be quieter. Like most of Singapore, sudden rain showers are common, so a light rain plan is worth having.
Combine it with
- First Xi-Ma Meeting site is only about 1.2km away, an easy add-on if you're interested in the history behind it.
- The Istana is roughly 3.1km away and can be paired with a taxi or MRT ride if its grounds happen to be open to the public that day.
- Little India (4.1km) and the National Museum of Singapore (4.1km) are both a bit further out but reachable by MRT, and work well as a separate half-day combined with each other rather than squeezed into the same trip as the gardens.
