歌舞伎町
Kabukichō
歌舞伎町（かぶきちょう）は、東京都新宿区の町名。現行の行政地名は歌舞伎町一丁目および歌舞伎町二丁目。
Kabukichō
Kabukichō is Shinjuku's entertainment district: a dense grid of neon-lit streets packed with host and hostess clubs, love hotels, izakaya, karaoke buildings, arcades, and small restaurants. Most travellers come to walk through it, photograph the neon signage, and eat or drink rather than to enter the nightlife venues themselves, many of which cater to a Japanese-speaking clientele or charge steep cover fees for outsiders. Shinjuku Golden Gai, a warren of tiny alley bars each seating only a handful of people, sits within Kabukichō and is worth seeking out separately.
Getting there
Kabukichō is a short walk from JR Shinjuku Station's east exit, roughly 5-10 minutes on foot. From central Tokyo, Shinjuku Station is reachable directly by JR lines (Yamanote, Chūō, Sōbu) as well as several subway and private railway lines, so the area is well connected from most parts of the city.
How much time to allow
An hour or two is enough for a walk-through and photos. If you plan to stop for a meal, a drink in Golden Gai, or an arcade, allow closer to three or four hours.
When to go
Kabukichō is at its most atmospheric after dark, when the signage is lit and the streets are busiest with staff touting for clubs and bars. It gets very crowded on weekend nights. Touts approaching pedestrians are common; ignoring them and walking on is the usual approach. During the day the area is much quieter and some of the neon impact is lost.
Combine it with
- Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower (0.7km) - a distinctive high-rise nearby, easily seen on the same walk.
- Shinjuku Gyoen (1.2km) and NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building (1.2km) - both a short trip away for daytime contrast to Kabukichō's nightlife focus.
- Meiji Jingū (2.2km) - further out, worth pairing with a wider Shinjuku/Harajuku day.
