Founded in 1411, this historic walled settlement was the heart of Gujarat for centuries and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Travellers visit to explore its preserved urban layout, traditional residential quarters, and historic architecture.

Getting There

Located in the heart of Ahmedabad along the Sabarmati River, the area is roughly 15 to 30 minutes by taxi or auto-rickshaw from the modern city center. It is accessible from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) in around 30 to 45 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan for 2 to 4 hours on foot, as many interior streets and alleys are narrow and closed to regular vehicle traffic.

When to Visit

The cooler months from November to February are best suited for walking. Early morning provides a quieter experience before traffic builds up. The area becomes heavily crowded from midday into the evening.
