Sabarmati Ashram

Located on the banks of the Sabarmati River, this site served as the residence of Mahatma Gandhi for twelve years. It functions as a museum and memorial, preserving the living quarters and personal belongings of Gandhi. Visitors go here to study the history of India's independence movement and the philosophy of non-violence.

Getting There

The ashram is located on the western side of Ahmedabad. From the city centre, it is accessible via auto-rickshaw or taxi. The journey typically takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the grounds, view the exhibits in the museum, and explore the residential areas.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and open to the elements, so visiting during the cooler months from November to February is advisable. Early morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday heat. The grounds can become crowded during national holidays and weekends.
