Overview

The Dey Palace is a 16th-century Ottoman fortress and residence in the Casbah of Algiers. Once the second-largest palace in the Ottoman Empire after Istanbul's Topkapi Palace, it served as the administrative center for the local Ottoman rulers. Travellers visit to see its traditional Islamic architecture, defensive walls, and courtyards overlooking the city.

Getting There

From central Algiers, a taxi to the upper Casbah takes 10 to 15 minutes. Walking uphill from the lower district takes about 20 to 30 minutes along steep, stepped pedestrian streets.

Time to Allow

Allow 1 to 1.5 hours to walk through the palace courtyards and remaining structures.

When to Go

Visit in the morning to avoid midday heat. Spring and autumn offer comfortable walking conditions. Heavy crowds are rare, though small tour groups may visit during peak hours.
