Peñón of Algiers

The Peñón of Algiers is a small rocky outcrop located within the harbor of Algiers. Originally a separate island, it served as the site of a 16th-century Spanish fortress. Over time, it was connected to the mainland to function as a breakwater. Visitors go here to see the historical remnants of the fortification and the intersection of the city's maritime defenses with the modern port.

Getting There

The site is located on the waterfront near the city center. It is accessible via a short taxi ride or a walk from the central districts. Depending on your starting point in the center, the journey typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Because the site is a specific point of interest within the harbor area, allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to observe the structure and the surrounding coastline.

When to Visit

The location is outdoors and exposed to the sea, so visiting during the spring or autumn avoids the peak summer heat. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday sun. As it is part of the harbor infrastructure, accessibility may vary based on port activity.

Nearby Attractions

The site is centrally located, making it easy to combine with other historical landmarks within a 0.4km radius:

  • Sidi Abderrahman Mosque (0.4km)
  • Sidi Ramdan Mosque (0.4km)
  • Djamaa El Kebir of Algiers (0.4km)
