Overview

The Central Mosque in Almaty is an active place of Islamic worship with capacity for up to 7,000 worshippers. It was reconstructed on the site of an earlier 1890 building that was destroyed by fire. Travellers visit to see modern religious architecture in Kazakhstan and observe active religious traditions in the region.

Getting There

Located just north of the city centre, the site is reachable by local bus, taxi, or walking. A direct drive from central Almaty takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Time to Allow

Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes to view the exterior courtyard and walk through the public sections of the interior halls.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings and early afternoons offer the quietest conditions for visiting. The grounds get crowded on Friday afternoons during congregational prayer times, when access for casual visitors is limited. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is required, and women must cover their heads before entering.
