Grachtengordel

The Grachtengordel is the historic canal district of Amsterdam, consisting of a ring of canals including the Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. Built during the 17th century, this area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travelers visit to walk along the waterways, observe the traditional Dutch architecture, and explore the surrounding streets.

Getting There

The district is located within the central part of Amsterdam. If you are staying in the city centre, most areas of the canal ring are accessible on foot within 5 to 15 minutes. Public transport, including trams, serves the perimeter and interior of the district.

Time Allocation

Depending on the activity, allow 2 to 4 hours for a walking tour of the main canals. Those choosing to take a boat tour or explore the side streets may require more time.

When to Visit

The area is accessible at all hours. It becomes crowded during the midday and afternoon, particularly in the summer months. Early morning visits provide a quieter experience with fewer pedestrians and tourists.
