Overview

The Great Mosque of Asmara is an active place of worship located in central Asmara, Eritrea. Built in 1938, it is a prominent landmark noted for its architectural design, which incorporates clean rationalist lines, Islamic detailing, a fluted minaret, and an open stone square.

Getting There

Because the site stands directly in the city center, it is reached easily on foot in about 5 to 10 minutes from most central locations. Local taxis and minibuses also connect the area to outer districts.

Set aside 30 to 45 minutes to view the exterior, minaret, and surrounding plaza. If entering the interior outside of prayer times, allow up to one hour.

When to Visit

Morning and late afternoon offer the best light for architectural viewing. The site gets crowded during daily prayer sessions, especially on Friday afternoons; avoid these times if you are visiting purely for sightseeing. Modest clothing covering shoulders and legs is required.
