Nature
Pilcomayo River
Overview
The Pilcomayo River is the longest western tributary of the Paraguay River, cutting across central South America. Near Asunción, travellers visit to see expansive wetlands, local birdlife, and open river scenery outside the urban core.
Getting There
From central Asunción, getting to riverside access points takes roughly 20 to 35 minutes by taxi, rideshare, or local bus heading south.
Suggested Duration
Allow 1 to 2 hours for a short walk and sightseeing along the banks, or up to half a day if navigating the waterways or walking along rural paths.
When to Visit
Early morning and late afternoon offer the most comfortable temperatures and active wildlife. The cooler, drier months between May and September are easier for outdoor exploration than the hot summer. The area is generally uncrowded, though ferry docks can be busy during commute times.
