Heisa Island

Heisa Island is a basalt island located in the Nile at the site of the former First Cataract in Aswan. It is inhabited by Kenzi Nubian-speaking residents, providing visitors with an opportunity to observe and experience Nubian culture and daily life in a short distance from the city.

Getting There

Access to the island is by boat from the Aswan city center or nearby docks. The travel time varies depending on the boat type and departure point, but typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours to explore the island and interact with the local community.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the cooler winter months to avoid the extreme heat of Upper Egypt. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday sun. Like many sites in Aswan, it can become crowded during the peak tourist season.

Combining with Nearby Attractions

Due to its location in the Nile, this island is easily combined with other nearby sites via boat. Consider visiting the following:

  • Bigeh: 1 km
  • Agilkia Island: 1.4 km
  • Trajan's Kiosk: 1.4 km
  • Temple of Isis in Philae: 1.5 km
