What It Is

Exarcheia is a central Athens neighborhood bordering Kolonaki and situated near the National Technical University. Named after a 19th-century merchant, it is known for street art, independent bookshops, record stores, and a distinct countercultural atmosphere that shows a different side of the city.

Getting There

Located just north of the city center, the area is an easy 10-minute walk from Omonoia Square or roughly 15 minutes on foot from Syntagma Square.

Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 2 hours for a self-guided walk through the streets and shops. If stopping for coffee or dining at a local taverna, plan for 2 to 3 hours.

When to Visit

Late afternoon and evening are the liveliest times as cafes and squares fill up. Daytime is calmer for walking. The area can get crowded after dark, and political gatherings occasionally take place near the university.
