Overview
The Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion is an Ethiopian Orthodox sanctuary in Axum. The site includes a 17th-century stone church, a 1960s cathedral, and the Chapel of the Tablet, which tradition holds as the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. The relic is kept strictly private under the guard of a resident monk. Access to the old church is restricted to male visitors, while the modern cathedral is open to all.
Getting There
Located in central Axum, the complex is a 5 to 15-minute walk from most central accommodation, or a brief ride in a local bajaj. From Axum Airport (AXU), the drive into town takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes by taxi.
Time to Allow
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to tour the grounds, visit the accessible sanctuaries, and view the collection of historic crowns, crosses, and manuscripts in the small museum.
When to Visit
Mornings offer cooler temperatures and a quieter environment. The complex becomes extremely crowded during major Orthodox feasts, particularly the annual Maryam Zion festival in late November. The dry season between October and March provides the most reliable weather. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required.
