Navigating Bafatá: Key Modes
Bafatá is a compact city along the Geba River where transport relies on walking and informal vehicles.
- Walking: The colonial-era center, riverfront, and Amílcar Cabral's birthplace are easily reached on foot. Distances are short, though unpaved roads make morning walks ideal.
- Motorcycle Taxis: Moto-taxis are the fastest way to outer districts and the bus station, navigating rutted dirt roads easily. Agree on the fare before departure.
- Shared Taxis: Sedans run along the central paved corridor, picking up passengers heading in the same direction until full.
Fares and Ticketing Realities
There are no transit passes, cards, or apps. All rides are cash-only, paid to the driver in West African CFA francs. Carry small coins and bills, as drivers rarely have change.
Getting from the Airport to Bafatá
Osvaldo Vieira International Airport (OXB) lies near Bissau, roughly 150 kilometers west along the paved highway.
- Shared Bush Taxi: Lowest cost band. Take a taxi from OXB to Bissau's transport park, then catch a shared bush taxi (sept-place). Effort is high because cars only leave when full, taking three to four hours.
- Private Taxi: Highest cost band. A direct hired taxi from the terminal eliminates vehicle changes and departs immediately, taking around two and a half to three hours.
Practical Transit Notes
- Service Hours: Intercity bush taxis stop departing by late afternoon. Moto-taxis operate all day, but service thins out after dusk due to unlit roads.
- Luggage: Large bags on bush taxis incur a small extra fee and ride on roof racks. Pack dustproof covers against road dirt.
- Accessibility: Sidewalks and step-free access are absent. Boarding vehicles and handling rough dirt paths requires full mobility.
