Dusit Zoo
What it is
Dusit Zoo, long known locally as Khao Din Wana or Khao Din, was Bangkok's oldest zoo, occupying parkland in the Dusit district next to the old parliament house and Dusit Palace. It closed as a zoo, and the site has been undergoing redevelopment as a public park. If you're planning a visit specifically to see zoo animals, check current status before you go, as the grounds no longer function as they did historically. Travellers who do come to the area tend to do so for the surrounding royal and government quarter rather than the zoo itself.
Getting there
The site sits in Dusit, north of Bangkok's old city core. From areas like Sukhumvit or Silom, a taxi typically takes around 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, since the neighborhood isn't directly served by the BTS Skytrain or MRT. From Khao San Road or the Rattanakosin area, it's a shorter ride, roughly 15-20 minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk.
How much time to allow
If exploring the park grounds and surrounding Dusit sights on foot, allow at least an hour or two, more if you're combining it with nearby palace visits.
When to go
Mornings are more comfortable given Bangkok's heat and humidity, and this holds for walking the Dusit area generally. As with much of central Bangkok, expect heavier traffic during weekday rush hours, which affects how long it takes to reach the area by road.
Combine it with
- Dusit Palace (0.5km) — right next door, easily paired in the same visit.
- Chitralada Royal Villa (0.6km) — also within easy walking distance.
- Phaya Thai Palace (1.8km) — a short ride away, worth adding if you have half a day in Dusit.
- Democracy Monument (2.4km) — further out, a reasonable link toward the old city on the way back.
