Pratunam is Bangkok's biggest clothing market, a dense grid of stalls, shophouses and multi-storey buildings selling clothes, accessories, fabric and bags, much of it at wholesale prices for buyers who purchase in bulk. Casual shoppers can still browse and buy single items, but the atmosphere is more functional than curated — it's built for volume, not for a leisurely boutique experience. The name means "water gate," a reference to the old canal-side location.
Getting there
From central Bangkok, Pratunam is most easily reached by the BTS Skytrain to Chit Lom or Ratchathewi stations, followed by a 10-15 minute walk, or by taxi, which can take anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. There is also a boat pier (Pratunam Pier) served by the Saen Saep canal boat, which can be faster than road traffic during peak hours.

An hour or two is enough for a general look around; if you plan to compare prices across multiple stalls or buy in bulk, allow half a day.
When to go
The market gets crowded and hot in the middle of the day, and aisles can feel cramped when busy. Mornings tend to be calmer, while evenings bring heavier foot traffic as more vendors and shoppers turn out. Expect the area to be humid and exposed to sun in parts, so light clothing is worth considering.
