Mariastern Abbey

Located near Banja Luka, this Trappist monastery is the only remaining site of its kind in Southeast Europe. Visitors go here to see the architecture of a complex that once served as one of the largest monasteries in the world, housing up to 219 monks. Today, only two monks remain, which contributes to a quiet atmosphere and a sense of the site's historical scale compared to its current state.

Getting There

The abbey is situated on the outskirts of Banja Luka. From the city centre, it is accessible via local taxi or rental car. The drive typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the grounds and observe the monastic buildings.

When to Visit

The site is generally quiet and does not experience heavy crowds. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon provides softer light for viewing the architecture. All seasons are suitable, though spring and autumn offer the most temperate weather for walking the exterior grounds.

Combining with Other Sites

Because of its location, the abbey can be paired with other nearby points of interest in Banja Luka:

  • Franciscan monastery Petrićevac: 2.8km
  • Park Mladen Stojanović: 3.4km
  • Hajji Omer Mosque: 3.4km
