Abuko Nature Reserve

Located south of Banjul, this is the first designated wildlife protected area in the Gambia. Travelers visit the reserve to observe a variety of indigenous plants and wild animals in their natural habitat.

Getting There

The reserve is situated south of the city center of Banjul. Access is typically via taxi or hired vehicle. The travel time varies depending on traffic conditions but generally takes a short drive from the central urban area.

Duration of Visit

Visitors should allow several hours to explore the trails and observe the wildlife. The amount of time spent depends on the length of the guided walk chosen.

When to Visit

Early morning is generally the best time for wildlife spotting, as animals are more active before the midday heat. The experience can vary by season depending on animal migration and plant growth patterns.
