Fort Bullen

Located at Barra Point at the mouth of the Gambia River, this site consists of the ruins of an old fort. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Kunta Kinteh Island and Related Sites. Travelers visit the location to see the remaining military structures and learn about the colonial history of the region.

Getting There

The fort is located across the river from the main city center of Banjul. To reach it, visitors must take a ferry from Banjul to Barra. Once across, local transport can be used to reach the point. The total travel time depends heavily on the ferry schedule and crossing duration.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the ruins and observe the surrounding coastline.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to the elements, so visiting during the cooler morning hours is advisable to avoid midday heat. The dry season is generally the most accessible time for travel in the region.
