The Sagrada Família is Antoni Gaudí's unfinished basilica, a working construction site as much as a place of worship. What draws visitors is the building itself: the dense, organic stonework of the facades, the forest-like columns and coloured light inside, and the ongoing construction, which is part of the experience rather than an inconvenience to work around.
Getting there
From central Barcelona (Plaça de Catalunya), it's about 20-25 minutes by metro (L2 or L5 to Sagrada Família station), or a 30-40 minute walk. Taxis take roughly 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. If arriving from Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), plan on 40-50 minutes combining the airport train or bus with a metro transfer.
How much time to allow
Budget at least 1.5 to 2 hours for the interior and towers. Add extra time if you plan to queue without a pre-booked ticket, as lines can be long.
When to go
Mornings, right after opening, tend to be calmer than midday. The site gets busy year-round, especially in summer, so booking a timed entry in advance is worth doing regardless of season.
Combine it with
- Torre Glòries (1.3km) — a short walk or metro ride, useful for a modern architecture contrast.
- Palau de la Música Catalana (1.8km) and Castle of the Three Dragons (1.9km) — both reasonable additions if you're spending a full day on Modernista architecture.
- Plaça de Catalunya (1.9km) — a natural endpoint if you're heading back toward the city centre afterward.
