Plaça Sant Jaume

This square serves as the administrative heart of Barcelona, located in the old town. It is defined by two primary buildings facing each other: the Palau de la Generalitat, the seat of the Catalan government, and the Casa de la Ciutat, the city hall. Visitors come here to observe the architecture of these institutional buildings and to experience the political center of the city.

Getting There

The square is located within the city center. It is accessible on foot from most central hotels and landmarks. Depending on your starting point within the Gothic Quarter or nearby districts, walking typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

Time Requirement

Since the attraction consists of the open square and the exterior of the government buildings, allow 20 to 40 minutes to walk through the area and observe the surroundings.

When to Visit

The square is open to the public at all times. It can become crowded during official holidays, political demonstrations or public events. Visiting during early morning hours generally avoids the largest crowds of pedestrians.
