Overview

The Dreiländereck is a monument in Basel marking the point where the borders of France, Germany, and Switzerland meet on the Rhine. Travelers visit to stand at the intersection of three countries and to observe shipping traffic along the tri-border port.

Getting There

From central Basel, take public tram line 8 towards Kleinhüningen or Weil am Rhein, then walk along the harbor. The journey from the city centre takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes at the site. The area consists of the marker monument and an open waterfront walkway, which does not take long to explore.

When to Visit

Visit on clear, dry days, as the open riverside location provides no shelter from rain or cold winds. Summer afternoons and weekends are typically the busiest times, while weekday mornings are quieter.

Nearby Attractions

Several sites in the surrounding area can be visited together:

  • Three Countries Bridge (0.4km): A footbridge connecting France and Germany across the Rhine.
  • Wiese (0.7km): A river area with paths suitable for walking.
  • High Rhine (2km): Riverfront stretches with waterside views.
  • Vitra Design Museum (2.6km): A museum located across the border in Germany.
