Gate of Spalen
Overview
The Gate of Spalen (Spalentor) is a preserved medieval city gate from the fortifications that once encircled Basel. Built during defensive wall expansions originating in the 11th century, the structure features a tall square tower flanked by two round turrets. Travellers visit to examine its intact medieval architecture, walk through the central archway, and see one of the few surviving pieces of the historic city perimeter.
Getting There
From central Basel, including Marktplatz, the gate is a 10- to 15-minute walk westward. Local trams also run directly to the adjacent Spalentor stop, taking roughly 5 to 10 minutes from the city centre.
Time to Allow
Allow 15 to 30 minutes. The visit is self-guided and focused on the exterior, providing enough time to inspect the stonework, examine the decorative details, and walk beneath the arch from both approaches.
When to Visit
Daylight hours are ideal for viewing the masonry and architectural details. Because it stands over an active public street, there are no interior bottlenecks or ticket queues, though foot and tram traffic around the square is heavier during weekday commute hours.
