About Sabra

Sabra is a neighborhood in southern Beirut where Lebanese residents and Palestinian refugees live together. Travelers visit this area to observe the daily routines, local markets, and the social fabric of a community shaped by displacement and coexistence. It provides a direct look at the urban reality of the city away from the primary tourist districts.

Getting There

The neighborhood is located south of the city center. The most common way to reach the area is by taxi or ride-sharing service from central Beirut. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Duration of Visit

A walk through the streets and local markets generally requires 2 to 3 hours. This allows enough time to navigate the residential lanes and observe the local commerce without rushing.

When to Visit

Visiting during the morning or early afternoon is recommended to see the neighborhood's commercial activity at its peak. Like much of Beirut, the area can become congested during rush hour. There are no specific seasonal closures, though summer temperatures can be high for walking tours.

Nearby Attractions

The location can be combined with other nearby sites to create a full day itinerary:

  • Shatila refugee camp (0.9km): An adjacent area with a similar historical context.
  • Bourj Abi Haidar (1.5km): A local landmark in the southern district.
  • National Museum of Beirut (1.5km): A museum housing the country's archaeological heritage.
