Benguela's Coastal Climate and Seasons

Benguela experiences a semi-arid coastal climate moderated by the cold Atlantic current. Unlike Angola's tropical interior, rainfall is low overall, concentrated between October and April, while the dry winter season (Cacimbo) runs from June to September.

June to September: The Cool Cacimbo

The Cacimbo brings mild temperatures, minimal humidity, and almost no rain. Mornings are frequently overcast with low sea mist, clearing to sunny afternoons. This is the optimal window for architectural walks through historic downtown and day trips along the coast to Baía Azul or Lobito via shared candongueiros (minibuses). Sea temperatures are brisk, but road travel from Catumbela Airport (CBT) is reliable and unhindered by mud or flooding.

October to May: Warmer Days and Rain

Humidity and heat rise steadily from October, peaking between February and April when brief, heavy rainstorms occur. While sunny beach hours remain common, flash rains can cause drainage issues on unpaved side streets. Avoid March and April if your priority is road travel or trekking. Note that the annual Benguela Carnival in February or early March attracts regional visitors, tightening transport and room availability.

Planning and Packing Tips

June to August is recommended for most travelers seeking comfortable conditions.

  • Cacimbo visits: Pack light layers, including a sweater or light jacket for breezy evenings, sturdy walking shoes, and sun protection.
  • Rainy season visits: Carry lightweight breathable clothing, an umbrella or rain shell, and mosquito repellent.
