Seasonal Atmosphere

Summer (June to August)

Summer brings long daylight and river swimming along the Aare. Locals drift to the Marzili baths, and Old Town streets see peak crowds. Because historic sandstone buildings rarely have air conditioning, indoor rooms can get warm.

Autumn (September to November)

September and October offer crisp air, foliage at the Rosengarten, and fewer tourists. November brings low fog, shorter days, and the packed Zibelesmärit (Onion Market) on the fourth Monday.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is cold and damp with occasional snow. December features Old Town holiday stalls, while January and February are very quiet. The city's six kilometers of covered arcades keep walking sheltered from rain and sleet.

Spring (March to May)

March and April bring quick weather shifts, but May warms comfortably. Gardens bloom, and sightseeing is relaxed before peak season begins.

Choosing Your Travel Window

  • Best for river swimming: July and August for warm water and active outdoor banks.
  • Best for quiet walking: May, September, and October for mild weather and minimal queues.
  • When to reconsider: Late autumn through winter if you dislike damp chill, or late November if avoiding festival crowds.

Events, Transit, and Packing

Direct trains link Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Bern Hauptbahnhof in about 75 minutes. Overnight visitors receive the Bern Ticket for local buses and trams. Accommodations book up during four annual three-week parliamentary sessions and July's Gurtenfestival.

Packing: Flat shoes are essential on cobblestones. Pack a waterproof dry bag for summer river floats, or windproof layers for winter.
