Holy Lavra of Saint Sabbas
Located in the Kidron Valley east of Bethlehem, this Eastern Orthodox monastery was founded in 483. It serves as an active residence for monks and is one of the oldest monasteries in the world. Visitors go here to see the early monastic architecture and the religious history of the region. Note that by longstanding tradition, women are permitted only as far as the tower near the entrance gate.
