Muslim Quarter

The Muslim Quarter

Located within the Old City of Jerusalem, this is the largest and most populous of the four quarters. Travelers visit this area to explore its dense network of markets, traditional shops, and historic architecture. It is also the starting point of the Via Dolorosa, the route traditionally followed by Jesus on the way to his crucifixion.

Getting There

The quarter is situated within the walled Old City. From the modern city center, visitors typically take a taxi or public bus to one of the Old City gates, such as Damascus Gate or Jaffa Gate. The journey generally takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic and the starting point.

Time Allocation

Depending on whether you are walking the Via Dolorosa or browsing the markets, allow 3 to 5 hours to navigate the narrow alleys and explore the main sites.

When to Visit

The area is crowded throughout the day, particularly during religious holidays and weekends. Visiting in the early morning allows for a quieter experience before the peak flow of tourists and shoppers. Summer months can be very hot, making spring or autumn more comfortable for walking.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its central location in the Old City, this area can be combined with several other sites within walking distance:

  • East Jerusalem: 0.3km
  • Pool of Bethesda: 0.3km
  • Church of the Holy Sepulchre: 0.4km
  • Christian Quarter: 0.4km
