What It Is

The Victoria Lines is a 19th-century British fortification spanning 12 kilometres across Malta. Constructed along a natural geological ridge, the wall was built to divide the island's rural north from the populated southern areas. Travellers visit to walk along the surviving stone parapets, defensive posts, and trenches while viewing the open countryside.

Getting There

From Birkirkara, access points along the ridge can be reached by public bus or car. Buses heading towards Mosta, Għargħur, or Mġarr take roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Driving or taking a taxi takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Time to Allow

Allow 1.5 to 3 hours to explore a specific sector at a moderate pace. Completing the entire 12-kilometre trail from coast to coast takes 4 to 6 hours.

When to Visit

The cooler months between October and April are best for hiking, as the route offers very little shade. During the summer, go early in the morning to avoid midday heat. The trail does not get heavily crowded.

Nearby Attractions

A visit can be combined with other sites nearby:

  • Tal-Qadi Temple (3.1 km)
  • Rotunda of Mosta (3.5 km)
  • San Anton Palace (4 km)
