Heraclea Lyncestis

This archaeological site is the remains of an ancient Greek city that was later ruled by the Roman Empire. Located along the Via Egnatia, the road that once connected Byzantium and Rome, the site served as an important episcopal seat during the early Christian era. Visitors go here to see the ancient city layout, including the theater and early Christian basilicas with preserved floor mosaics.

Getting There

The site is located approximately 2 km south of Bitola city centre. It can be reached by a short taxi ride or a walk of about 25 to 30 minutes from the central area.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the ruins and view the mosaics in the basilicas.

When to Visit

The site is an open-air archaeological park, so it is best visited during the spring or autumn to avoid the peak summer heat. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the strongest sunlight, as there is limited shade across the ruins. It does not typically experience heavy crowds.
