Cristóbal Island

Located in the southern part of the Bocas del Toro archipelago, this island is a natural site characterized by its diverse inhabitants, including an indigenous village and a small foreign settlement. Travelers visit the island primarily for its wildlife and coastal environment. The eastern side features Laguna Bocatorito, also known as Dolphin Bay, which is a frequent location for dolphin watching.

Getting to the island requires a boat trip from the main hub of Bocas del Toro. Since the area is an archipelago, water taxis are the primary mode of transport. The journey typically takes a short amount of time depending on the departure point and weather conditions.

Planning Your Visit

Visitors should allow a half-day to a full day to explore the coastline and the bay. This provides sufficient time for boat excursions to the dolphin watching areas and visits to the local settlements.

The best time to visit is during the dry season to avoid heavy rainfall that can affect boat travel. Like many popular spots in the archipelago, the dolphin watching areas can get crowded during peak tourist seasons and weekends.

Nearby Attractions

Because the island is part of a cluster, it is easy to combine a visit with other nearby locations via boat:

  • Carenero Island: 0.4km
  • Bocas del Toro Archipelago: 2.6km
  • Bastimentos Island: 3.7km
  • Colón Island: 6.1km
