Transport Modes in a Car-Centric City

Brasília was designed for motor vehicles rather than pedestrians. Distances along the Monumental Axis are vast, making motorized transport essential.

• Ride-hailing and taxis: The most effective way to travel. They navigate the highway loops easily and drop directly at government buildings and sector hotels.
• Metrô-DF: Quick and reliable between the central Rodoviária station and the South Wing (Asa Sul). It does not serve the North Wing (Asa Norte) or the airport.
• City buses: Concentrated at Rodoviária do Plano Piloto. Useful for specific sector links, but routes are complex and slow for visitors.

Practical Transit Notes

Peak hours: Major radial roads suffer heavy congestion during morning and evening rush periods. On Sundays, the central expressway (Eixão) closes to vehicles for recreation.

Operations and accessibility: Metro lines stop before midnight. Standard buses have tight turnstiles that hinder large suitcases. Metro stations include elevators and ramps, but vast open spaces make wheelchair travel on outdoor sidewalks demanding.
