Špilberk Castle

Overview

Špilberk Castle stands on a hill overlooking central Brno. Originally built in the 13th century as a royal residence, the site later served as a military fortress and a prison. Travellers visit to explore its historical structures and see how its role shifted across different centuries, as well as to view the city from the hilltop grounds.

Getting There

The site is reachable on foot from Brno's city centre. Walking uphill through the surrounding park paths takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the main central squares.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours if you wish to see the exhibitions and inner fortifications. If you only want to walk the exterior grounds and viewpoints, 45 to 60 minutes is sufficient.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn offer comfortable walking conditions. Summer brings larger crowds and warm midday temperatures on the uphill paths, making mornings or late afternoons preferable. Winter visits can be cold and windy due to the elevated position.
