What to Expect

Gentpoort is a surviving medieval city gate that formed part of the old fortifications of Bruges. The imposing red-brick tower contains museum exhibits covering the city's defense history. Visitors can climb the tower for a quiet view across the surrounding canals, spires, and rooftops of the historic town.

Getting There

The gate stands along the ring canal on the southeastern edge of the historic center. Walking from the central Market Square takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. It can also be reached by bicycle along the canal paths or via local city buses heading toward the outer ring.

Time to Allow

Allow around 45 minutes to an hour for a visit. This is enough time to examine the exhibits inside the gatehouse and make the climb up the tower.

When to Visit

Clear weather is ideal so you can see across the city from the upper level. The site tends to be much less crowded than landmarks in the central square, making it a calmer stop during busy travel seasons.
