Poda Protected Area
Overview
Poda Protected Area is a coastal wetland reserve located south of Burgas, managed by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds. It encompasses freshwater, brackish, and saline marshes that support a wide variety of resident and migratory bird species. Visitors come primarily to observe birdlife and wetland habitats from dedicated hides and nature trails.
Getting There
The reserve lies along the main road heading south from central Burgas toward Sozopol. Driving by car or taxi from the city centre takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Regional buses running south from the central bus station also stop near the entrance.
Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 2 hours to walk the marked paths, use the viewing facilities, and observe wildlife across the different marsh zones.
When to Visit
Spring and autumn provide the highest bird activity due to seasonal migrations along the Black Sea coast. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times of day for clear viewing and active wildlife. The site rarely gets crowded, ensuring a quiet visit throughout the year.
