Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park
Overview
Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park protects a large wetland ecosystem along the Cacheu River in northwestern Guinea-Bissau. As a designated Ramsar site, the reserve encompasses extensive mangrove forests and tidal waterways. Travelers visit to take guided boat trips through the channels, observe coastal flora, and view resident and migratory bird species.
Getting There
The park lies adjacent to the town of Cacheu. From the town centre, boat launch points on the riverfront are a 5 to 10-minute walk. From Osvaldo Vieira International Airport (OXB) in Bissau, the road journey north to Cacheu takes approximately three to four hours.
Time to Allow
Allow a half-day. Boat excursions along the river channels generally last two to three hours, with extra time needed for local coordination.
When to Visit
Visit during the dry season from November to May for clear travel conditions. Schedule boat trips during early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and better wildlife viewing, while taking tide levels into account. The park receives few tourists and does not get crowded.
