Fort William Lighthouse

Overview

Fort William Lighthouse stands on Dawson's Hill in the old town of Cape Coast, Ghana. Built as a fortified lookout and later converted into a navigational beacon, it is a separate structure located about 600 meters from Cape Coast Castle. Travellers visit to inspect historical military architecture and view the town and coastline from an elevated position.

Getting There

The site is accessible on foot or by road from central Cape Coast. Walking up Dawson's Hill takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes from the town centre. A local taxi ride takes around 5 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan for 30 to 45 minutes to view the structure and look out over the area.

When to Go

Visit during early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat, as the hilltop has little shade. The site rarely draws large crowds, making for a quiet stop year-round.
