Transport Modes in Cape Town
Cape Town is a city where geography dictates transport. For most visitors, the following modes are the most viable:
- Ride-Hailing Apps: The most common choice for point-to-point travel. They win on convenience and safety, especially for trips to the City Bowl, V&A Waterfront, and Camps Bay.
- MyCiti Bus: A rapid transit system with dedicated lanes. It is the best option for moving between the City Centre and the Atlantic Seaboard.
- Rental Cars: Essential for those visiting the Cape of Good Hope or the Winelands, as these areas have limited public transport.
- Taxis: Local minibus taxis are ubiquitous and cheap, but they are primarily used by residents and follow specific, often unmarked routes.
Passes and Tickets
The myconnect card is required for the MyCiti bus system. It is a rechargeable smart card that offers lower fares than cash. This suits commuters and tourists staying for several days. It does not suit those who only plan to take one or two short trips, as the card purchase is an additional step.
From Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to City Centre
- Ride-Hailing: Low effort, medium cost. Direct door-to-door service.
- Airport Shuttle: Medium effort, medium cost. Shared transport that may include other passengers.
- Rental Car: High effort (navigation/parking), medium cost. Best for those heading straight to outlying regions.
Practical Travel Notes
- Rush Hours: Heavy congestion occurs on the N1 and N2 highways during morning and evening peaks. Avoid crossing the city center during these times.
- Luggage: Ride-hailing vehicles vary in size; request a larger vehicle if traveling with multiple suitcases.
- Accessibility: MyCiti buses are generally accessible, but older infrastructure in the city center may present challenges for mobility-impaired travelers.
- Safety: Stick to registered ride-hailing apps or official airport taxis rather than hailing unmarked cars on the street.
