Bradford Memorial Chapel

Bradford Memorial Chapel, formally the Matilda L. Bradford Memorial Church, is a Protestant church in Cebu City built in 1913. It's recognized as a national historical landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the only Protestant church in Cebu to hold that status. Travellers interested in the city's colonial-era and religious history come to see the building itself and its place in Cebu's Protestant heritage, which stands apart from the Spanish Catholic architecture found elsewhere in the city.

Getting there

The chapel sits within Cebu City's downtown core, close to several of the city's other historic churches and museums. From the city centre, a short taxi or ride-hailing trip of around 10-15 minutes is usually enough, and it's also reachable on foot if you're already exploring the nearby cathedral district. From Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), plan on roughly 30-45 minutes by car, depending on traffic across the bridge into the city.

This is a compact stop. Most visitors spend 20-30 minutes viewing the exterior and interior before moving on.

When to go

Mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking between sites downtown. The surrounding streets can get busy with traffic and foot traffic during weekday business hours, so factor that into how long the walk between nearby attractions takes.

What to combine it with

The chapel is within easy walking distance of several other landmarks, making it simple to build a short historic-district itinerary:

  • Museo Sugbo (1.3km) — a provincial museum housed in a former jail
  • Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral (1.4km) — the city's main Catholic cathedral
  • Cathedral Museum of Cebu (1.4km) — religious art and artifacts
  • Minor Basilica of the Holy Child (1.5km) — one of the oldest and most visited churches in the Philippines

Given the distances, these sites work well as a single half-day walking route through downtown Cebu.
