The Olango Island Group is a group of islands found in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. It comprises Olango island and 6 satellite islets namely: Caubian, Camungi, Caohagan, Gilutongan, Nalusuan, Pangan-an, and Sulpa. The island group has a total land area of approximately 1,030 hectares. It is divided under the jurisdiction of the city of Lapu-Lapu and the municipality of Cordova, Cebu. What it is
Olango Island Group is a cluster of one main island (Olango) and six small satellite islets off Cebu's east coast, protected as the Philippines' first Ramsar wetland site. The main draw is the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, a mangrove and mudflat area that hosts migratory birds, particularly during the northern winter migration season. Beyond birdwatching, the surrounding waters and reefs around the smaller islets (such as Gilutongan and Nalusuan) are used for snorkeling and diving day trips.
Getting there
From Cebu City, the usual route is to cross the Mactan-Mactan Channel bridges to Mactan Island, then continue to Punta Engaño or a coastal jump-off point in Lapu-Lapu City or Cordova, where boats cross to Olango and its islets. The overland portion from central Cebu City takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic, followed by a short boat ride of about 15-30 minutes to reach the islands, longer for the more distant satellite islets.
Time to allow
A half-day is enough for the wildlife sanctuary alone. If combining with a boat trip to one or more of the outlying islets for snorkeling, plan for a full day.
When to go
Birdwatchers should aim for the migratory season roughly from September to April, when the sanctuary sees the largest numbers of visiting shorebirds; visits outside this window will show far fewer birds. Sea crossings to the islets are more comfortable in calmer weather, so avoid typhoon season if possible. Boat trips to popular islets can get crowded on weekends.
Combine with
- Olango Island (0.8 km) — effectively part of the same visit, as the sanctuary sits on this island.
- Mactan Island Aquarium (6.2 km) and Magellan Monument (6.2 km) — both on Mactan, reachable on the way back toward the city.
- Liberty Shrine (6.2 km) — also on Mactan, a convenient stop when returning from the boat crossing.
